Sweet & Sour Meatballs

From: Grandmama, adapted
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup + 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon + 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon + 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup + 1/4 cup Kraft original bbq sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons + 1 Tablespoon Worchestshire sauce
  • 24 ounces canned tomato sauce
  • 3 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped bell pepper
  • 1 1/2-2 sleeves saltine crackers
  • pepper to taste
  • up to 1/2 cup water
Directions:
  1. In a deep pan, whisk together 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup Kraft original bbq sauce, 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce and pepper.  Add water as needed to reach non-thick consistency.  Simmer over medium heat.
  2. In large bowl mix together 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 cup Kraft original bbq sauce, 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, ground beef, eggs, onion, bell pepper, crackers and pepper (except only add more than 1 1/2 sleeves saltine crackers as needed).
  3. Form into large balls (but small enough to fit inside cupped hands). When the sauce is boiling, add meatballs until sauce covers them. Simmer 35 - 40 minutes.
My Notes:
  • Mom would always serve this with mashed potatoes.
